I am fairly sure that the first line of the VIA8233 wiki page is not correct. Reasons are:

1. The via82xx.c driver source file refers to the VIA VT82XX South Bridge.
2. The Realtek ALC650 page has a long section about an ALC650 audio chip connected to a Via8233.
3. I could not find a spec for the VIA8233 but the VIA page on the current VIA8235 states:

   Supporting the AC'97 version 2.2 standard, the VIA VT8235 when connected to a compatible codec can support 6-channel audio for a complete surround sound listening experience. In addition, the interface can support S/PDIF digital outputs and optional features such as tone and loudness control, and 3D stereo enhancement.

4. Lower in the page there is a comment about the newer VIA8335 chips, implying that they are also audio chips.
5. When an audio chip is connected via southbridges, the name of the southbridge will always be returned as the primary name of the audio device. The audio chip will only appear as the secondary name. This will confuse many people.

From this I conclude that:

• The VIA8233 and VIA8355 Southbridge chips only support audio when connected to a suitable audio chip like the Realtek ALC650.
• That people are confused when the system reports the interface chip as being a sound card. This is because the interface chip will be the primary on the PCI list od devices and the actual audio chip will only appear as the secondary device.

So: The Via8233 is NOT an AC97-compatible integrated soundcard manufactured by VIA Technologies. But: The VIA is a southbridge chip, which can act as an interface to a suitable audio chip.

If the above is correct then at lot on this page needs to be revised. Details of what works and what has problems may depend a lot on the audio chip actually used. Other wiki pages will also need to be revised - i.e. the line "Realtek ALC950 - Based off the via8233 Via chipset" on the Sound Card page.

Is it possible to contact the device programmers for more authoritative input?

I'll wait for comments before trying any changes.
