How come my gnome mixer panel has so many sliders in it? I only have a built in AC97 Stereo soundcard?? Where are the docs that describe each slider?

It partially seems to have something to do with loading the OSS emulation drivers in ALSA. If you don't load those, you cut the number of slider panels roughly in half. With OSS you seem to have multiple panels with volume controls for the same hardware. This is a bug that needs to be fixed - send your patches!
