When I use FAQ018 method to get more than one app play sound at time, all apps plays at 100% volume independently of what is set in alsamixer (or gnome-alsamixer or whichever).

Probably you're using old alsa packages. Try updating alsa-utils and alsa-base to 1.0.9 (alsa-base to 1.0.9b at least). That way, mixing must work without need of .asoundrc file, and if you remove .asoundrc alsamixer setting will return to work.
If it still plays at 100% volume, try a newer version of the Linux kernel (2.6.14+) or the alsa sources from cvs. If it still does not work with the newest sources, please report your results to the alsa mailing lists.
