[edit] 2007-17-02

Ingomueller.net 06:43, 18 February 2007 (EST): I'll try to explain why I restored the version before the serie of changes by Jmpoure. I also sent the same text to the mailing list.

As it was just before my restoring, there were three links to pages that didn't exist yet. The links sounded great, but in order to make them keep what they promised, there is a HUGE amount of work to do! A hardware matrix with hundreds of different cards is nothing that can be done in some days, neither weeks (and probably not even months). What makes me think that is the fact, that there would have been the possibility to collect the necessary information (the Sound cards article, the sound card matrix on the official ALSA site...), but it has simply not been done. Too few people are working on that issue, so why would it be different now.

So, when these link don't keep what the promise (which they won't at least for quite a lot of time), they should not be there. This is just confusing and dissappoint for the user and they take place that should be used by more helpfull links. Plus the impression of "under construction" (which will probably always be there somewhere) doesn't need to start on the main page.

Finally, there are already pages that somehow have a similar purpose as three that would have to be created: The official hardware matrix, the Sound cards page and Alsa preferred soundcards article. The don't do exactly the same job, but they do what can be done with our means at the moment.

I agree with Jmpoure in the need to change something and I also agree with his point to move the Sound cards link up because of its importance, but I think that first, the content should be created and then, it should be linked to.

I invite everybody to join a discussion on ALSA:Community Portal about that topic!

Ingomueller.net 03:43, 31 December 2006 (EST) Refactoring the pages about alsa and about this wiki, I realized that the following link in the developper section doesn't really provide what it promises (it didn't before my changes). Any ideas how to change it?

markc 18:51, 6 January 2007 (EST) It looks more like an About page. It could be removed and some thought put into a better and more complete (eventually) developers section.
Ingomueller.net 22:54, 6 January 2007 (EST) There should definitely be a developers section! Unfortunately, I can't contribute any material to that section because I don't know anything about it. Hopefully someone else has time to do it some time. Untill then, I redirected the AlsaFeatures page to the ALSA page, because I moved the content from AlsaFeatures to ALSA (that's where it belongs IMO). Once there is more content about that topic, the links have to be reorganized anyway.

markc 18:42, 6 January 2007 (EST) This MediaWiki interface has been in place for nearly 48 hours now and all seems well. I did have to make a copy of the original database to work around a faulty "searchindex" table that could not be repaired in place. Fortunately just copying the whole database and pointing to that new copy seems to have worked. Next step is to update the MediaWiki software to the latest version and hopefully do so using the SVN method. I also need to modify (and test) the PHP code to support multi-site resuse of a single codebase to suit this servers setup.
